Get rid of the funk and get your organize groove back

The new year has arrived and there seems to be a huge amount of lethargy going around. Although we are all back at work, school or day to day life, there doesn't seem to be that spark in our actions. Friends seem to be demotivated and even I have found it hard to get out of bed some days (yep even professional organizers have their moments). Something needs to be done to remove the lethargy, so here are my suggestions to get rid of the funk and get your groove back:

  1. Create a new routine - It doesn't have to be for your whole life, but create a new routine for certain aspects, such as drink a glass of warm water first thing in the morning (the Japanese do this to remove the toxins from their bodies and don't eat breakfast until much later in the morning). My new routine for this month is meditating (again). I stopped it a few months ago but want to get back into that zen zone.

  2. Give yourself time - Don't pressure yourself to do everything. It won't help you finish the tasks, especially if you are not feeling motivated. Create to-do lists, noting which parts of the to-do list should be in your "Next Action List" or "Someday/Maybe" list and then start going through the Next Action List, one by one. Each time you finish a task tick it off. The feeling of finished a task is great and will motivate you to move onto the next task.

  3. Figure out what is not working for you - for the next few weeks in January start being aware of what is not working for you within your life; whether it be having that certain friend in your life, having 5 cups of coffee a day or even checking your email every minute. If something in your life is not working for you, remove it from your life.

  4. Declutter the excess stuff - Walk around with a dust bin bag or cardboard box and start picking up items that you do not like or does not spark joy in your life (thanks to Marie Kondo for bringing that phrase to the public). You will notice after a short time that you have removed a huge amount of clutter in your life just from this simple exercise. If you do it once a week imagine how much stuff you can get rid of.

  5. Get rid of the empty boxes! - Just do it. No you do not need them. The movers will bring packaging material and wrap that glass vase perfectly. And no one needs the iPhone or Galaxy box after a few days of using the phone.

  6. Organize what is left - Create organized systems for all your items so that you know where they are at all times. If you need help with creating the organizing systems, we can come in for a day and help you.

Let me know what you are doing to get rid of the funk and get your groove back this year.
