Four Relocating Decluttering Tips
Relocating to another country is a huge job. You have to sell your bulky items and the beloved car, cancel the utilities, have a few going away parties and most importantly move your stuff into containers to be shipped to the new destination.But ask yourself this... do you really need to take all that stuff you own with you in the container? There are certain areas in the relocating decluttering process that are always a minefield, so here is my helpful guide to start the decluttering process:
Check the Weather
What is the weather like in your location? If it is warm like the Middle East, you won't need twenty types of knee-high boots and winter coats. Keep three coats that are of various thickness as you will need them when you travel and two pairs of boots. Remember you can always buy new winter items in the destination when you are there. If you own an $1000 Canada Goose Jacket and you can't (or don't want to sell it), can you leave it at your parents home or at a friend's so you can grab it when you are back visiting?If you are moving to colder climates, you may not need 50 pairs of flip flops and sandals. If there are a lot of malls and shops in your new destination can you get a new wardrobe when you arrive there and save on the shipping costs of taking your old, out of style, out of season clothes?
Ditch the Electronics
Check the voltage in your new location. If there is a difference in voltage you will need a power converter for each appliance. It may not be worth buying 20-30 power converters for your television or toaster. Considering the price of electronics nowadays, it may be cheaper to buy the electronic goods once you have arrived in your new home. Sell the current items and make some money.Of course, when it comes to your expensive music equipment and state of the art of computers, bring them with you and buy a few power converters, if needed.
File the Papers
Review all of your papers using the acronym FAT to determine what should be filed, delegated/acted on or shredded/trashed. Whilst reviewing the papers, check whether you will need the receipts and paperwork for tax purposes. If you don't need them or you can find the information online, declutter them out of your life.
Donate the Old
Look at the items in your home currently. Do you look at some of the items and get annoyed seeing it? Do you have a look of disgust on your face when holding that glass vase you got for your wedding from Auntie Maryam? If you don't like it now, don't bring it with you to your new destination. Sell the item or donate it to a worthy charity.Also look at souvenirs from your holidays in the region, trinkets, mismatched dinnerware, mugs from networking events, etc. If you don't like them, use them or want them, donate them to a charity, freecycle or give it to a friend. Remember someone's charity, is someone's treasure.There are just a few of my tips on the relocating declutter process.
